Faqr is an Arabic word and is commonly known among the masses as poverty, destitution
and hard times. It literally means indigence, but Mystics describe it as that purpose of a
person’s life.
About which the Prophet said: Faqr is my pride and Faqr is from me.
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen, quotes about Faqr are given below
- The greatest reward in the path of Faqr is Allah Himself.
- The initial stage in the path of Faqr is to inwardly negate everything except Allah, signifying a firm belief in His Oneness. This pivotal step leads to the inward dissolution of all the worldly relations and entanglements that a person erroneously regards as his lord or deity
- There are three distinct phases of Faqr. The first is journey towards Allah, the second involves journeying with Allah and the final phase is becoming Faqr itself.
- Faqr is not related to one’s lineage, it cannot be inherited.
- No one is superior or inferior in the path of Faqr.
- Faqr is the most elevated spiritual level where a person becomes indifferent to all needs, seeking only Allah’s will. Such a person surrenders completely to the fate destined by Allah, asks for nothing but Allah, and seeks nothing from anyone besides Allah. Interference in Allah’s ordain and will is a sin to him. Hence, he desires nothing except Divine presence and proximity.
- In Faqr a person acquires the gnosis of Allah and spiritual observations simultaneously
