Lahore — 26 March 2026: While mankind wages wars against external enemies, the Holy Prophet ﷺ once pointed towards his chest and declared that the greatest enemy of man lies hidden within him — and the battle against it is the Jihad-e-Akbar, the greatest holy war. This profound truth forms the foundation of Purification of Innerself in Sufism, a sacred work authored by Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen, Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman Madzillah ul Aqdas.
What is Nafs?
The nafs — or baser self — is the veil between Allah and His slave. As long as this veil remains, the seeker cannot attain the vision of Allah. When the nafs is purified and elevated to the level of nafs-e-mutmaina (the satisfied self), the heart becomes Qalb-e-Saleem — pure and flawless — and the path to Divine closeness opens wide.
The book explains that the nafs is not a simple enemy. It is cunning, hidden and deeply rooted. Its desires begin with the stomach, expand into sexual desire, then grow into the love of wealth, power and fame. From these root desires spring fifteen devastating spiritual diseases — arrogance, pride, jealousy, narcissism, pretence, anger, malice, stinginess, backbiting, lying, evil speculation, snooping, talebearing, negligence and greed.
The Spiritual Diseases Destroying Us
Each of these diseases is a veil between man and Allah. Arrogance destroyed Satan despite fifty thousand years of worship. Jealousy caused the first murder on earth. Pretence is described as closer to idolatry than faith. Backbiting devours good deeds like fire burns wood. Negligence keeps the seeker frozen on his spiritual journey.
Most alarmingly, these diseases operate in secret. A person may perform prayers, fasting and worship outwardly, yet be completely destroyed inwardly by these illnesses without even realising it. As Sultan Bahoo (R.A.) warns — even if a person’s back bends from excessive devotions, these diseases cannot be cured by hard worship alone.
The Only True Cure
The book makes clear that just as physical illness requires a physician, spiritual illness requires a Murshid Kamil — the perfect spiritual guide. The authentic cure prescribed by Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen is the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat under the supervision of the perfect spiritual guide who is the Sahib-e-Musamma — the possessor of the Divine Essence and personal name of Allah. This is the prophetic way of purification, the same method the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to purify the souls of his Companions.
Tehreek Dawat-e-Faqr invites all sincere believers to seek this purification through the blessed guidance of Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen, Hazrat Sakhi Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman Madzillah ul Aqdas at Masjid e Zahra Village Rangeel Pur Sharif, Sundar Adda, Multan Road, Lahore.
