Lahore September 13, 2024: Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (RA), a revered 18th-century Sindhi Sufi saint, poet, and philosopher, played a pivotal role in promoting Sufi poetry and culture. His magnum opus, “Shah Jo Risalo,” is a collection of Sindhi verses that blends spiritual wisdom, Sufi thought, and Sindhi folklore. Through his poetry, he conveyed the essence of divine love, unity, and the search for truth, using metaphors from local legends and the natural world.
Bhittaiβs work was not just literary; it was deeply spiritual and aimed at connecting people with the divine through music and poetry. His verses were often accompanied by the playing of the tambura, a traditional instrument, creating a unique blend of mysticism and melody that became central to Sindhi Sufi culture. He advocated for a simple, ascetic life and upheld values of tolerance, compassion, and devotion, making his teachings resonate across diverse communities.
His shrine at Bhit Shah remains a cultural and spiritual center, where his poetry continues to be sung by fakirs (devotees) in his traditional musical style, preserving his contribution to Sufi culture and spirituality.
